2007 BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION WINNERS
Promentis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was established to commercialize fundamental scientific discoveries made by Dr. David Baker and his colleagues at Marquette University. As a result of recent discoveries regarding the role of a complex molecular mechanism that regulates the metabolism of a key neurotransmitter in the brain, glutamate, a new molecular target was identified for the development of pharmaceuticals to treat major psychiatric, behavioral, and/or neurological disorders. Promentis plans to discover, develop, and market new drugs for the treatment of important human diseases, focusing initially on developing a new antipsychotic drug to treat schizophrenia. The market for antipsychotics is one of the largest, currently valued in excess of $10 billion. This market is increasingly accessible to new drugs for a variety of reasons including poor efficacy and tolerability of existing medications, increased competition from generic companies as current medications go off patent, and lack of scientific innovation in identifying new therapeutic targets. We believe that the unique mechanism that Promentis Pharmaceuticals is targeting will allow the development of novel, first-in-class drugs. Historically, drugs that exhibit greater efficacy or are better tolerated have penetrated rapidly into this market, and at least three current drugs routinely achieve annual sales of nearly $2 billion or more.
